Fuel Use and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Guide for Truck Carriers

A wealth of information exists regarding the effectiveness of devices and strategies that may improve the fuel efficiency of class 8 tractors. While the information exists, there are many devices and strategies that must be considered, the information is scattered, statements about the efficacy of devices are sometimes varied and even conflict, and conclusive evidence is sometimes difficult to find.
This guide compiles the available information and prioritizes the devices and strategies that have been proven to work from those that have not. We find that reducing aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, idling, and increasing driver training were the most effective and cost-effective ways to reduce fuel use. Based on these findings, we define two packages of fuel saving devices and strategies that and calculate the potential fuel savings for a typical fleet.
